Buffon in clear over illegal gambling

Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon was cleared of illegal gambling by the Italian football federation on Friday. The 28-year-old, who kept goal for Italy in the World Cup, was suspected of betting on five Juventus matches between 2004 and 2005. Stefano Palazzi, the FIGC's chief prosecutor, decided to archive the case after a review of the evidence.
Murcer has operation
NEW YORK, New York
Former New York Yankees player Bobby Murcer watched the Independence Bowl from his Houston hospital bed after surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Murcer, now a Yankees broadcaster, was alert and joking with staff and family members Friday, a day after surgery at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, according to his wife, Kay.
He had been having headaches and feeling a loss of energy.
Woods to skip opener

Superstar Tiger Woods will skip the US PGA Tour's season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii next week, the world No. 1 golfer confirmed on his Web site on Friday. It will be the second year in a row, and the third time in his career, that Woods has absented himself from the elite event open only to tournament winners from the previous season.
It's Walchhofer again

Michael Walchhofer has single-handedly turned Austria's struggles into victories in only two days.
On Thursday, Walchhofer snapped a 13-race winless streak for the Austrian men's team. On Friday, he became the first skier to win back-to-back World Cup downhills in Bormio. No other skier had ever won two straight, even from one year to the next.
