Australia upsets Russia 2-1

Alicia Molik and Mark Philippoussis won their singles matches Saturday and Australia upset top-seeded Russia 2-1 in the opening match of the Hopman Cup mixed team tournament.
Molik, who has struggled on the tour because an inner-ear problem, started with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over No. 6-ranked Nadia Petrova.
Philippoussis then beat Russian Davis Cup star Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 7-6 to clinch the points ahead of the mixed-doubles match.
Philippoussis spent most of last season off the tour and is hoping to get a wild-card entry at the Australian Open next month,
"It is nothing to get excited about, it was a good match and a good win, a positive start," Philippoussis said.
The former Wimbledon finalist has been working with Andre Agassi's former trainers Darren Cahill and Gil Reyes in Las Vegas.
Philippoussis said his fitness work with Reyes had given him a great platform for the 2007 season.
"I feel like I have a very good base and it is definitely very important for me now to build on that base and to keep getting strong," he said.
Molik, 25, who has been struggling with a serious inner ear infection that could potentially have ended her career, said her win over a top 10 player was encouraging.
"For me it is a bit a weight lifted off my shoulders," Molik said. "I had to go out and face the No. 6 in the world, (and) I feel like I belong.
"I was there once before, and certainly I am not intimidated by a lot of those top 10 players and I think that showed."
The United States was playing France later Saturday in the other Group A match.
