Hingis, Stepanek find love match
SYDNEY, Australia
Former world number one Martina Hingis is to marry Czech tennis player Radek Stepanek.
The 26-year-old Hingis confirmed news of her engagement at a media conference at the Gold Coast yesterday where she is preparing to play the Australian women's hardcourt championships.
Hingis said 28-year-old Stepanek, ranked 19 in the world, had proposed to her in Prague last month but it was not until she arrived in Australia that anyone noticed her diamond ring.
"I was surprised when it was spotted right away because in Switzerland I've been walking around for a month and no-one's said anything," she told reporters.
Grizzlies sack coach
MEMPHIS, Tennessee
The Memphis Grizzlies, whose woeful 6-24 is the worst record in the National Basketball Association, sacked coach Mike Fratello on Thursday.
"I'd like to thank Mike for the contributions he made to the Grizzlies organization," president of basketball operations Jerry West said.
"He is a great coach and friend, and he did an outstanding job guiding this team to two playoff appearances in Memphis. We just felt it was time to make a change and move in a different direction based on our record and future goals." The team did not name an interim coach.
Charlton signs Zheng
LONDON, England
China's national team captain Zheng Zhi has been signed by Charlton on loan from Shandong Luneng with a view to a permanent deal.
The 26-year-old, who can play either in defense or midfield, had a brief trial at The Valley under former head coach Les Reed last month before leaving to play for China's under-23s as an overage player in the Asian Games in Qatar.
Zheng, his country's footballer of the year in 2003 and 2006, will be the first Chinese player to represent the Addicks and is new manager Alan Pardew's first signing.
