Hundreds of Filipinos evacuated from floods

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes in three eastern Philippine towns flooded by three days of pounding rain, officials said Friday.
The rain, triggered by a cold front, also caused power outages in Catarman town and rendered several roads impassable in two nearby towns in Northern Samar province, according to the government's National Disaster Coordinating Council.
Floodwaters have reached waist-level in some areas, though no casualties have been reported, officials said.
More than 1,000 villagers are being temporarily sheltered in schools, churches, gymnasiums and the provincial capital building and are being given food rations, said Adriano Fuego, head of the government Office of Civil Defense in the eastern Philippine region.
Northern Samar, an impoverished province 480 kilometers (300 miles) southeast of Manila, is near the Bicol region, where typhoon-triggered mudslides on the slopes of Mayon volcano last month buried entire villages, killing more than 1,000 people.
