Thousands of striking doctors in Nepal return to work

Thousands of doctors ended their strike and returned to work Friday after the government assured them of security and legal protection, officials said.
Hospitals began to function normally as doctors returned to their positions. They went on strike Monday after relatives of a patient who died in a hospital vandalized the building and attacked its doctors, accusing them of negligence.
Sudha Sharma, chairperson of the Nepal Medical Association, said the government agreed after marathon talks to provide police personnel at hospitals and laws to protect doctors.
Sharma said a unit would be set up to take complaints from patients and relatives against doctors.
During the strike, tens of thousands of patients were forced to return home without treatment.
