Japanese stocks open higher in year-end trading

Exporters led Japanese stocks higher on Friday, helped by a weaker yen in the year's last morning of trade. The dollar was lower against the yen.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index opened up 3.68 points, or 0.02 percent, to 17,228.49 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The broader Topix index, which includes all shares on the exchange's first section, inched up 0.95 points, or 0.06 percent, to 1,679.86 points.
Exporters like Canon Inc., Toyota Motor Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. led the rise, encouraged by a weaker yen in recent days.
The U.S. dollar was trading at 118.91 yen on the Tokyo foreign exchange market at 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) Friday, down slightly from 118.93 yen from late Thursday in New York. The euro was unchanged from late Thursday at US$1.3146.
