Doctors in Rome perform angioplasty on Italy's interior minister Giuliano Amato

Doctors in Rome performed an angioplasty Thursday on Interior Minister Giuliano Amato, the Interior Ministry said.
The afternoon procedure to reduce or eliminate blockages in the coronary arteries was planned and went well, the ministry said. Amato was awake throughout the procedure and could return home as early as Friday.
Amato, 68, is a former premier and one of the few Socialists to emerge unscathed from the corruption scandals of the early 1990s.
He led an austerity government in 1992-1993 and served as premier again in 2000-2001. He also served as treasury minister and helped draft the EU constitution.
