The Postman - A Magical Comedy 郵差 will be performed by the Taiwan Drama Performers’ Theatre 台灣戲劇表演家劇團 at the Taipei City Government Family Theater 台北市政府親子劇場 (2F, No.1 Shifu Rd., Taipei 臺北市市府路1號二樓 Tel: (02)8789-5001) He has been delivering letters since 1945. His first was his brother’s love letter. The letter he lost was his mother’s letter to his father. The most distant letter he delivered was a farewell letter to his daughter. His last letter only had the names Ah-chong and Ah-fen, but no address. He looked for the recipients for forty years only because he insisted on delivering the letter. He has witnessed the changes of modern Taiwan, the love of the world and the passing of international fashions. Tickets, priced NT$250 - NT$1,200, are available through ERA ticketing.
Die lustige Witwe 風流寡婦, an operetta by Lehar, will be staged on December 31 and January 1 at the National Concert Hall 國家音樂廳 (21-1 Zhongshan S. Rd., Taipei 台北市中山南路21-1號 Tel: (02)3393-9888) by the National Symphony Orchestra, with special appearance by internationally-acclaimed soprano Eleanor Wen 文以莊. The plot of Die lustige Witwe centers on a group of diplomats from Pontevedro, a small, fictional eastern European kingdom that is facing a financial crisis. The only one who can resolve the crisis is Ms. Glawari, a wealthy young widow who is being pursued by a host of young Frenchmen. In order to prevent her from marrying one of these foreign suitors, and taking Pontevedro’s wealth away, the country’s ambassador in Paris decides to take matters into his own hands. And as so often happens in such cases, chaos soon ensues. Tickets, priced NT$400 - N$2,000, are available through NTCH ticketing.
Cats 貓 comes back to Taiwan for 32 performances across Taiwan, with the first show starting on January 1 in Tainan and the last show on February 10 in Kaoshiung. Cats is a dance musical based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, which the composer Andrew Lloyd Weber recalled as having been a childhood favorite. The songs of the musical comprise Eliot's verse set to music by the composer, the exception being the most famous song from the musical, "Memory", for which the lyrics were written by Trevor Nunn after an unrelated Eliot poem entitled "Rhapsody on a Windy Night". Since its opening in London in 1981, Cats has been presented in over twenty countries and in about two hundred and fifty cities. The Moscow Magic Clown Theater 莫斯科歡樂默劇‧小丑王 will engage in an island-wide tour January 13 - 23, with performances in Taipei City, Hsinchu, Taichung, Taoyuan, Changhua, Taipei County, Zhongli and Xinjuang, respectively. Coming from the mystical lands of the far North, 10 clowns wearing colorful makeup, baggy pants and funny shoes will play with simple props like bike, chair, flowers and balloons to create 16 short performances centered on the art of pantomime. Each performer gives a distinct character to his or her roles, and the end result is a dazzling lineup of characters including a large-breasted nanny, a sullen-looking artist, a sweet dolly girl, ballerinas, fat ninjas and a robust biker. The performances are full of slapstick humor and loud, explosive action. Audience members who want to try out their comic skills on the stage and have fun will also be encouraged to step up. Established in 1998, Moscow Magic Clown Theater has recruited professionally trained performers in Russia and traveled all around the world with its constantly revised productions. The troupe is famed for its culturally-sensitive shows that include cultural and social references of the countries they go. Tickets, priced NT$400 - NT$800, are available through ERA ticketing.
Taipei Eye 台北戲棚觀光劇場 presents "Traditional Arts Performances" every Friday and Sunday at Taiwan Cement Hall's Shih-Ming Hall. Taipei Eye is designed as a show window for Taiwan's traditional performing arts, intended especially for international friends. One is able to appreciate how Taiwanese arts have bloomed over the last hundred years and enjoy great performances here. The performances include various styles of Chinese traditional arts such as Peking Opera, Tribal Dances, and acrobatics. The performances are with Chinese, English and Japanese subtitles.
