The Bellydance Superstars 獨領風騷‧肚皮舞孃 will stage performances throughout the island March 28 - April 1. Belly dancing may not quite be the new rock 'n' roll but it is undoubtedly the biggest thing since Riverdance. Belly dancing is truly demographic defying. The dance has African, Turkish and gypsy origins and was never originally intended for seduction. The perception of belly dancers as sexy babes is actually a Hollywood creation. In fact, the dance is thought to have been invented to help women prepare their abdominal muscles for the rigours of childbirth, and was historically performed by women for women. Today, belly dancing is not just a spectator sport. It is a serious cardiovascular workout and the fastest growing dance and fitness trend all over the world. Proper belly dancing is sensual rather than sexual, and this world-renowned group from America is set to present an eye-feasting experience for not just men but women alike. Tickets, priced NT$800 - NT$2,500, are available through ERA ticketing, or contact Da Da Arts Promotion Co. at (07) 537-0000 for more information.
