Indonesian shares hit all-time record on gains in telcos blue chips

Indonesian shares climbed to a new all-time record high Thursday on the last day of trading for 2006 on gains in telecommunication blue chips.
Traders said firmer a rupiah and expectations over a continuing cut in interest rates by the central bank also boosted overall sentiment, though profit taking by retail investors limited gains.
The Jakarta Stock Exchange Composite index closed up 2.259 points or 0.1 percent at 1,805.523, surpassing Wednesday's record of 1,803.264, but down from the intraday high of 1,814.257. Gainers led losers 118 to 89 while 61 other stocks were unchanged.
The main index has risen 55 percent since the start of the year and traders hopes a continuing rise by another 15 percent next year.
Heavyweight Telkom gained 1 percent to 10,100 rupiah while rival Indosat rose 2.3 percent to 6,750 rupiah on hopes for strong 2006 earnings.
Bank Mandiri, the country's largest bank by assets, lost 0.9 percent to 2,900 rupiah and limited the year-end gains.
Meanwhile, the local currency, the rupiah ended flat against the U.S. dollar which closed at 9,036 rupiah in listless trading as most participants are on holidays.
The stock market will be closed Friday.
