Toyota to begin making Yaris compact car in China in mid-2008 to meet growing demand

Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday that it will begin production of its Yaris compact car in China in mid-2008 amid growing demands for efficient, economical small cars there.
Toyota plans to produce 80,000 to 90,000 Yaris, sold as Vits in Japan, annually at its joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., the Japanese automaker said in a statement.
Toyota said that the joint venture, Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., or GTMC, will increase its capital by US$49 million (euro37 million), or about 5.7 billion yen.
In May, the joint venture began making Camry cars. Sales of GTMC-made Camry cars are expected to reach 57,000, higher than the initial plan of 50,000 cars between June and December this year, Toyota said.
