Australian PM says U.S. President Ford will be remembered as safe guide

Former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford will be remembered as a forthright man who safely led his country through domestic and international troubles, Prime Minister John Howard said Thursday.
The Republican president who took power from 1974 to 1976 with the resignation of disgraced Richard Nixon died Tuesday night at the age of 93.
"As President, he provided calm leadership and healing to a nation troubled by high inflation, a depressed economy, an energy crisis and international challenges," Howard, a close ally of U.S. President George W. Bush, said in a statement.
Howard listed among the international challenges the United States' final withdrawal from the Vietnam war as well as reducing Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union and China.
"President Ford will be remembered as a forthright and decent man who safely guided the United States of America in troubled times," Howard added.
