Christmas candles cause costly fire
LOS ANGELES, California
A California family were left counting the cost of their choice of Christmas tree decorations after a blaze that caused 2.3 million dollars in damage to their home, fire officials said Tuesday.
Firefighters said a blaze that ripped through the family's luxury residence in Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles, was caused after candles placed on a Christmas tree ignited branches.
No one was injured in the fire, but the family's newly remodelled 330-square-meter home was effectively gutted by the flames, Newport Beach fire chief Paul Matheis said.
"It's a great illustration of how fast those trees burn, if they do catch fire," he said.
Baptisism time
CHARLESTON, West Virginia
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's 1-year-old daughter, Violet, has been baptized at Christ Church United Methodist, where the actress' parents are members.
Pastor Randy Flanagan said members of the congregation were not star-struck - or did not show it too much - when the Hollywood couple showed up on Christmas Eve with their daughter.
Vying for a spot
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia
Cambodia yesterday called on its citizens to vote online to support the kingdom's bid to get the famed Angkor Wat temples named one of the new seven wonders of the world.
Officials hope the Angkor complex, capital of the powerful Khmer empire from the ninth to the 15th century, will win the "New 7 Wonders of the World" campaign, launched by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber.
Angkor will have to compete with other aspiring wonders such as the Acropolis in Athens, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and India's world-famous monument to love, the Taj Mahal.
