Taiwan shares rise 0.1 percent after profit-taking in financials

Taiwan shares rose slightly Wednesday after profit-taking in financial issues erased early gains.
The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange gained 5.59 points, or 0.1 percent, to 7,733.18.
The index peaked at 7,790.31 before falling back to its closing level _ still its highest since finishing at 7,785.62 on Sept. 5, 2000.
Fund managers sold financial plays to take profits, said KGI Securities trader Randy Chang.
The financial subindex lost 0.3 percent.
Chinatrust Financial fell 0.6 percent to 27 New Taiwan dollars, while Taiwan Cooperative dropped 1.1 percent to NT$23.55.
Gains in steel shares offset the declining finance sector. The steel subindex rose 1.7 percent.
China Steel advanced 1.2 percent at NT$34.4.
