Special arms budget finally to be reviewed

Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) said yesterday that he expected his colleagues from both the ruling and opposition parties to pass a supplementary arms procurement budget proposal and to confirm the nominees for the Control Yuan before the end of the current legislative session in mid-January,.
Wang made the remark after the Legislative Procedure Committee agreed for the first time that it would allow the NT$6.3 billion supplementary budget to be placed on the agenda for a full session on Friday, so that all legislators could decide whether to refer it to defense and other committees for further discussion.
The supplementary budget covers funding for a feasibility study of diesel-electric submarines and first-year costs for P-3C anti-submarine aircraft that were part of package of weapons offered to Taiwan by the U.S. government in April 2001.
There is also initial funding for an upgrade of Taiwan's PAC-II Patriot missiles and for work to be done on a runway for transport aircraft on Taiping Island in the Spratly Island chain.
