2 killed as heavy fog in China causes accidents, strands airline passengers

Two people were killed in highway collisions blamed on dense fog that shrouded northern China, while airports canceled dozens of flights, stranding thousands of travelers, news reports said Tuesday.
Nineteen other people were injured in the highway accidents in the provinces of Anhui and Shaanxi as fog rolled across China on Monday and Tuesday, the government's Xinhua News Agency reported.
The fog, caused by cold air pushing in from Siberia, worsened already poor air quality in cities by trapping pollutants, prompting authorities to warn people to stay indoors or wear masks, Xinhua said.
Dozens of airline flights were canceled or delayed in the major cities of Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Tianjin and Jinan, stranding or delaying more than 19,000 passengers, Xinhua said.
It said visibility in Jinan was less than 10 meters (30 feet).
The highway linking Beijing to Shanghai was temporarily closed due to poor visibility, while navigation was banned on some parts of central China's giant Yangtze River, Xinhua said.
