326,460 more ID cards to be renewed in Taipei City

Old ROC identity cards will become invalid beginning on January 1, 2007. However, a great number of citizens have not yet renewed their ID cards.

Take Taipei City for an example, the total number of old ID cards that need to be renewed is 2,182,823. However, only 1,856,738 card holders, or 84.51 percent of the total number, have renewed their ID cards. That means 326,460 people will have to renew their ID cards within the week.

According to household registration authorities, all Taiwan citizens are required to use new ID cards beginning on January 1, 2007, but those who fail to renew their ID cards by then will not be fined. However, opening bank accounts and applying for passports will require new ID cards.
