Taiwan rows to silver on day of disappointment

Island's basketballers thrashed 113-50 by Yao Ming-led PRC team

The women's rowing team has won Taiwan's third silver medal in the single's sculls team rowing final with a time of 8 minutes and 5 seconds yesterday, to bring the total medal count for Chinese Taipei to three silvers and three bronzes at the 14th Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.
Taking the gold in the event were the women rowers from China, as they raced to a one length finish ahead of the Taiwanese, also leaving squads from Uzbekistan, South Korea, Burma, and Indonesia in their wake.
Taiwan team coach Hung Jui-chang said the team had the capability to win the gold, but it nevertheless was a good result with the silver due to the strong wind on the river during the race.
Otherwise, it was mostly a day of frustration for Taiwanese athletes in Busan yesterday, as they came away empty handed in a number of medal opportunities such as judo. The women's volleyball lost 3 games to none to the Japanese.
They were outmatched in cross-strait competitions, as the women's soccer were edged by the PRC national team 1-0, and in an embarrassingly wide-margin, Team Taiwan was thoroughly crushed by the mainland Chinese 113 to 50 in men's basketball.
Yao Ming, the NBA top draft pick for the Dallas Mavericks, led the Chinese offense with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
In another highly anticipated contest, Japanese baseballers hammered Team Taiwan 8 to 3 with a key 5-run rally in the bottom of 6th inning to turn the game around.
Taiwan had taken a 2-0 lead in the game after the 4th inning, however Team Nippon were able to figure out Taiwanese starting pitcher Wang Chien-ming in the 6th, with two consecutive hits to occupy first and second base to start the rally. One out later, Japanese leftfielder Kida Go ripped a double to score both runners. Kida later scored on an RBI-single to leftfield by Yoshiura Takashi.
With two outs, starter for Taiwan Wang was replaced by leftie Huang Chin-chih to limit the damage. Huang did not have it on the night, as he threw two wild pitches to allow two more runners to cross the plate. By the end of sixth inning, Japan had scored 5 runs and got in front 5-2.
The matter got worse for Taiwan in the bottom of 8th inning, with two men on, Koyoma Takeshi took Taiwan reliever Pan Wei-lun deep over the centerfield for a three-run homer, to increase the score to 8-2. Taiwan made a feeble attempt to get back with one run in the ninth to make the final 8-3.
In another important baseball matchup, the host South Koreans showed no mercy to the PRC team with a 8-0 victory to leave both the Koreans and the Japanese with a good chance to make the medal rounds.
Team Taiwan takes on the tough South Koreans in a crucial battle of the top teams in the tournament. It is a must-win situation for the Taiwanese to avoid two straight defeats and and an early exit from the competition.
