AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Two of media's most significant organizations are merging.
The American Society of News Editors and Associated Press Media Editors announced Tuesday that they have combined to form the News Leaders Association.
The two groups' members, made up of newsroom leaders and journalism educators, approved the move at their joint News Leadership Conference in Austin.
ASNE, founded in 1922, and APME, which began about a decade later, have long worked together to raise journalistic standards, improve newsroom diversity and fight for First Amendment rights.
They'll continue to work jointly for the next year until the merger's completion, which is expected to happen by next September's News Leadership Conference.
APME President Angie Muhs and incoming ASNE President Nancy Barnes both say they believe their organizations will be stronger together.
