Wife of Pakistan's ex-premier Sharif dies at London hospital

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The political party of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says his wife Kulsoom Nawaz has died at a hospital in London after months in critical condition. She was 68.

Maryam Aurangzeb, spokeswoman for the Pakistan Muslim League party, said Nawaz died before dawn Tuesday.

She said arrangements were being made to bring her body back to Pakistan for burial.

Aurangzeb said Nawaz was suffering from throat cancer and she had undergone surgery at a hospital last year.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have been held at a jail in Pakistan since June when they returned home to serve their sentences over corruption cases.

Sharif appeared before a court in Islamabad on Tuesday. He has also applied for bail but a court has yet to rule on his request.
