NKorean media says giant halo marked anniversary of leader Kim's rise to top military post

North Korean media reported Monday that a giant halo appeared in the sky over North Korea on the eve of the anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il's rise to the top military post, underlining the strong cult of personality surrounding the totalitarian ruler.
Kim is revered as a near demigod in North Korea and the "Sun of the 21st Century" is one of a number of honorifics that the communist regime's propaganda scribes invented for him. The North's state media often carry reports on halos on major anniversaries of Kim and his family.
On Monday, the North's Korean Central News Agency said that an "unprecedentedly huge halo" appeared around the sun over the northeastern city of Kusong on Saturday, a day before the anniversary of Kim's 1991 takeover as supreme commander of the country's 1.1 million-strong armed forces.
Kim took over North Korea after his late father, Kim Il Sung, died in 1994.
