Hualien supplying five-star hotel with chemical-free food produce.

The food bounty from Hualien County is free from chemicals and this is something that the Hualien County Government headed by Hualien County Magistrate Hsieh Shen-san (shown holding a basket of farm produce in photo) is extremely proud of.
Organic agricultural produce from Hualien says a lot about farmers who are determined to use only environmentally friendly methods to grow or raise food for the dining table. In fact, they refuse to use chemical fertilizers, pesticides or antibiotics. They are interested in preserving the natural ecology.
Hualien's Fumi rice, for example, passed Japan's very strict 127-point test of quality. The farmers in Hualien deserve the credit.
Farmers from Hualien let their products be subjected to standard testing procedure before putting them in the market. This way they earn the trademark of quality and excellence. The origin of the food produce is thereby easily traced, too.
Eleven towns and villages are contributing vegetables, fruits, livestock and fishery products - all conforming to the clamor of consumers for safe, nutritious and delicious food products - to the Cantonese culinary feast on the second floor of the Ambassador Hotel in Taipei until January 31.
Chef Lin Chien-long (shown also in the picture) is tapping a whole cornucopia of food products from Hualien to pamper palates at the Ambassador Hotel's Cantonese restaurant. For example, he brings together beef slices and shansu or nest fern in one recipe. Taipei diners normally have to travel to the highland areas to be able to enjoy special mountain vegetables. But now they can simply order dishes using ingredients originating from Hualien.
The sweet potato from Hualien gets baked in a special way by the chef with wonderful result. The spotted grouper arriving at the table makes mouths water. Pigs raised without antibiotics on special farms are protected against diseases in a natural way. The healthy pork with layers of fat gets cooked to really stimulate the appetite. Meanwhile the sunfish is paired with X.O. sauce.
Actually appetizers on the menu range from peeled and marinated tomatoes with plum flavor to green papaya with a taste of passion fruit. Chef Lin puts to palatable use different kinds of products from Hualien such as plum sauce, cinnamon sauce and even bee honey.
Rice varieties from Hualien range from the usual kind eaten during a meal to the fragrant alternative for wrapping with assorted ingredients into a delicious dumpling. The nutritious black glutinous rice or purple rice goes into the making of a sweet dessert by the experienced five-star hotel chef. Sunfish-flavored popsicle also makes it all the way to Taipei for consumers to taste in classy surroundings.
Dishes served at the Ambassador Hotel's Cantonese cuisine restaurant until January 31, 2007, start at NT$380 per order. For table reservation, call tel. (02)2100-2100 ext. 2370 or 2376.
