Ed Bledsoe swears the sound of angels was the last thing he heard before a call from his great-grandson abruptly ended and a wildfire killed the 5-year-old boy, his 4-year-old sister and their great grandmother while consuming their Redding, California, home.

So the irony wasn't lost on him when three angel figurines were found among the items he has recovered from the charred remains of the home.

Three weeks after the July 26 deaths, Bledsoe still refers to his wife, Melody, and their great-grandchildren in present tense.

He said Monday he sometimes copes by imagining they're just away on vacation.

Meantime, he keeps busy planning their memorial and collecting keepsakes from what's left of the house.

He chokes up as he tells of finding a knife he had taught his great-grandson to make.
