RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Residents and school children are being evacuated from buildings in a central Brazilian city after a large explosion at a steel factory.
The explosion happened Friday afternoon at the Usiminas factory in Ipatinga, a mid-sized city in the state of Minas Gerais.
In a statement, Usiminas said that a gasometer exploded, and firefighters were working to secure the area. The statement also said that there were no injuries.
News portal G1 reported the evacuations and showed large plumes of smoke over the city.
