NEW YORK (AP) — New York City can be an intimidating destination. Travel expert Pauline Frommer is here to help with a new book, "Frommer's EasyGuide to New York City 2018."

Frommer offered tips in an interview with the AP Travel "Get Outta Here!" podcast , including this hotel advice: Consider staying in downtown Manhattan or even Long Island City, Queens. You might end up in "a chain hotel," but you'll save a lot of money.

And don't be afraid to take the subway. Frommer says it's cheaper and often faster than cabs.

Frommer also recommends some of her New York favorites, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Circle Line cruise, a history tour of the Financial District, cocktails at The Aviary NYC in Columbus Circle and a jazz club called Smoke.
