BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Top Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate are offering starkly different assessments at a global conference ahead of the midterm election.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., was highlighting economic growth, the new tax law and President Donald Trump's upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. McCarthy says he's optimistic about the GOP keeping control of the House.

But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., says he worries about rising income inequality, the job skills gap and the ability of leaders to unify Americans. Those are issues he promises Democrats will tackle if they take control of Congress this fall.

The two men spoke Monday at the annual Milken Institute Global Conference.
