BERLIN (AP) — Mainz struck a major blow in its fight for Bundesliga survival with a 3-0 win over Leipzig on Sunday.
Pablo De Blasis' first-half penalty put Mainz on track for its seventh home win of the season, Alexandru Maxim sealed the result with five minutes remaining, and Ridle Baku took advantage of a mistake from Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano to complete the scoring on his Bundesliga debut.
Mainz moved three points clear of Wolfsburg, which consequently drops into the relegation zone with two rounds remaining. Wolfsburg occupies the relegation playoff place, two points above Hamburger SV in an automatic relegation place.
Last-place Cologne was relegated on Saturday.
Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita was sent off with his second yellow card in injury time and will miss the side's next game against Wolfsburg.
Leipzig has now failed to win in four Bundesliga games.
Borussia Dortmund had the chance to reclaim second place with a win at Werder Bremen later Sunday.
