HOBART, Australia (AP) — Defending champion and second-seeded Elise Mertens advanced to the Hobart International final with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over Heather Watson on Friday.
Watson, a qualifier, hadn't dropped a main-draw set en route to Friday's semifinal and was looking for a spot in the final of the tournament she won in 2015.
"(It is) just frustrating. Thought I made too many unforced errors," Watson said. "Because I'd been playing so well, I expected more of myself."
Mertens will play either fifth-seeded Lesia Tsurenko or Mihaela Buzarnescu in Saturday's final. The other semifinal was scheduled for later Friday.
