TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- It has become crystal clear that transparent milk tea made by the Japanese beverage company Suntory is a big hit with Taiwanese consumers, as it is selling like hotcakes in Taiwan, reported UDN.

After the drinks flew off the shelves at Taiwanese branches of the Hong Kong-owned supermarket chain Wellcome (頂好超市), its Taiwanese hypermarket rival A.mart (愛買) followed suit by offering a special sales promotion of two for the price of NT$49 (US$1.62) from Nov. 15 to Nov. 28. However, the clear tea drinks disappeared from its shelves at their original price of NT$56 on Nov. 14, before the sales campaign had even commenced.

A.mart PR Manager Wang Chia-hui (王佳慧) told UDN that they will urgently add 5,000 more bottles to shelves to meet the surging demand.

Transparent milk tea pandemonium has reached such a fever pitch in Taiwan that reports have surfaced of customers buying 20 or even 100 at a time.

RT-Mart (大潤) is planning to stock its shelves with 4,800 bottles of the colorless tea in December at a price of NT$70 per bottle, before promotional discounts take effect.

Meanwhile, in Japan the price for a 550 ml bottle of transparent milk tea sells for 85 to 120 yen, or the equivalent to NT$22 to NT$32.
