DPP councilor candidate physically assaults Ma

Kuomintang Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) who is currently embroiled in a corruption allegation, was physically accosted by a female Democratic Progressive Party Kaohsiung City councilor candidate yesterday morning when they were campaigning around the same area.
According to the Chinese-language newspapers, Ma was shaking hands with the vendors of a traditional market when a female DPP candidate, Chang Ho-yi, took a swing at the chairman and hit him on the left cheek and shoulder, even though he was surrounded by a group of body guards.
The seven-second incident apparently did not damper Ma's resolve to campaign for his own party's Kaohsiung City mayor hopeful, Huang Chun-ying. He continued with his original schedule without any delays.
Chang justified her move and said she only did what many people in Taiwan would love to do.
"He is only one person, yet he has a whole group of body guards protecting him. Is it really necessary to have such elaborate police protection just for one person? How is this not an abuse of power?" she asked rhetorically.
Chang went on to say Ma, who is concurrently serving as the Taipei City mayor, should step down immediately from his chairmanship due to his alleged misuse of his designated special allowance.
Widely seen as the KMT 2008 presidential election hopeful, Ma has agreed to relinquish his title if indicted by prosecutors. So far, he has denied any wrongdoing.
