About 50,000 fans protest Brazilian club's struggles

About 50,000 Bahia fans marched on the streets to protest at the traditional Brazilian club's position in the third division of the national league.
The fans chanted and carried banners on Friday demanding that the club's officials resign and that the team gain promotion to the second division next season.
"Bahia is my life, is my pride, is my love," the fans chanted, some 1,450 kilometers (900 miles) northeast of Sao Paulo, according to local sports daily Lance.
A Brazilian first-division champion in 1988 and the 1959 Brazilian Cup winner, Bahia needs to win its final two matches of the season to keep its promotion hopes alive.
Bahia, which is at Brasil de Pelotas on Sunday, is sixth in the eight-team final stage. Only the top four will reach the second division.
Last month, Bahia's match against Ipatinga was abandoned in the 65th minute after its fans invaded the field in another protest.
Bahia was demoted from the first to the second division in 2003.
