TAIPEI (Taiwan News)--15.5% percent of Pingtung County’s population is over the age of 65. This means it is officially classified as an aged society. The county government says elderly people living alone account for 2.2% of the population, or about 2,800 people.
The county government cares for them at different levels. It issues identity bracelets for elderly people with memory loss. It also plans to set up a dedicated area for elderly people with varying levels of elderly care. The County’s Social Welfare Bureau said that up to the end of July there were 129,000 residents over the age of 65. In Gaoshu, Checheng, Xinpei and Nanchou Townships over 20% of residents were elderly, so these were classified as an aged society.
Up to the end of June there were 2,800 elderly people who lived alone. The county government divide these into three levels of vulnerability. There are around 2,700 people at the lowest level of vulnerability who can get by with some help with local care stations, family welfare centers and so on.
Around 100 people are considered to be medium vulnerable and they are looked after with social welfare emergency care systems and long term care management. For elderly people with memory loss who are among the most vulnerable, the county government offers an identity bracelet.
