Tragedy ensued after drunk driving arrest

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)--Today at 4:11 am, police found that a man arrested on the evening of Aug. 31 for drunk driving had hung himself in a detention cell using the elastic from his trousers. He was sent to hospital for emergency treatment but could not be revived. Police informed his family and will clarify responsibility for the incident.


The Taichung City Wuri precinct issued a press release stating that on Aug. 31 at 6:30 pm the Wuri Dadu precinct detained a male driver surnamed Hsu, for drunk driving, with an alcohol reading of 0.33MG / L. At 9:30 pm, Hsu was taken to the precinct detention room to await transfer to the Taichung court for prosecution.

At 4:11 am this morning, police officers found Hsu had used the elastic from the waist of his trousers to hang himself in the detention room. They immediately sent him to hospital, but Hsu was pronounced dead at 5:20 am. The police informed the man’s family. After completing an investigation, they reported the death to prosecutors at Taichung court for investigation and clarification of the responsibility of police officers involved.

Police found that Hsu was unmarried, and worked on construction sites. He was in the habit of drinking, and had two previous records of arrest for drunk driving. The police officer on duty surnamed Chiang searched Hsu, in accordance with legal provisions before putting him in the detention room. Chiang removed Hsu’s personal belongings and documents and sealed the items for safe-keeping. The prosecutors' investigation into the incident is underway.
