TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – According to reports from the South China Morning Post, on Tuesday while speaking to the media, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying reminded United States officials that there is only one China and that Taiwan is a part of it.

The reminder or warning came as Taiwan’s defense minister is set to visit Central American allies to strengthen the bond.

Taiwan’s defense minister Feng Shih-kuan (馮世寬) will be visiting some of Taiwan’s allies in Central America from Tuesday until September 8 and is likely to make brief stops in New York and Los Angeles.

Beijing warned the US against any military contact with Taiwan and reminded Washington about the “One-China policy”.

“China consistently insists on using the ‘one China’ principle in handling the issue of the Taiwan region’s exchanges, and firmly opposes countries with which China has established relations conducting any type of official contact or military exchanges with Taiwan. Our position is clear and consistent. I believe the United States is extremely clear on this,” said Hua as quoted by the South China Morning Post.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has cleared the doubts of Beijing by confirming that the minister will only make brief transit stops in New York and Los Angeles and there is nothing else on the minister’s agenda in the United States.

The minister would be visiting Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador to further deepen friendly bilateral relations.

Taiwan now has official ties with only 20 countries after Panama dropped its diplomatic ties to instead recognize China in June. Beijing believes that Taiwan is merely a province with no right to diplomatic ties with other countries.
