WASHINGTON (AP) — An assistant to President Donald Trump has dismissed statements by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson regarding a military response to North Korea as "simply nonsensical."
Trump aide Sebastian Gorka argues to the BBC that Tillerson was stepping beyond his role as diplomat.
The Trump administration has drawn criticism for offering mixed messages as tension rise over North Korea.
Trump on Tuesday warned North Korea not to threaten the U.S. and spoke of meeting the North with "fire and fury like the world has never seen." On Wednesday, Tillerson played down those comments and said Americans shouldn't be concerned "about this particular rhetoric."
Later, in an interview on Fox News Channel, Gorka said he was misinterpreted and that it's nonsensical for reporters to force Tillerson to give details of military options.
