TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - Taiwan’s Taipei has been ranked as the fifth most high-tech city in the world, surpassing its Asian competitors such as South Korea and Singapore to be ranked at the top for the region, according to Business Insider, which consulted Australia-based research firm 2thinknow to compile the list.
2thinknow is a data innovation agency specializing in analyzing innovative cities, which has been providing standardized data and related services to large and small corporations, consulting firms, city governments and universities.
Ten factors related to technological advancement were considered to compile the rankings, including the number of patents filed per capita, startups, tech venture capitalists, ranking in other innovation datasets, and level of smartphone use, with a total of 85 cities worldwide being ranked.
San Francisco, California claimed the number one spot to be the most high-tech city in the world, while Taiwan’s Taipei topped the Asia’s list to snatch the fifth spot globally.
The report cited the analysis conducted by the research firm that says Taipei is ahead of its competitors in the field of industrial design, and focuses more on the hardware technology rather than software.
The city is also home to some of the largest PC companies in the world, including Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, and Acer, while also scores highly in its number of venture capitalists, said the report.
