TAIPEI (Taiwan News)—As the biggest sporting event Taiwan has ever hosted is entering the countdown stage, Taipei 2017 Universiade’s athletes’ village will open on August 12, and along with it the biggest dining hall/restaurant ever opened in Taiwan.

How to meet the dining requirements for over 10,000 participants from around the world is an issue that has attracted much attention. The dining hall contains 3500 seats and involves nearly 1000 staffs and will provide five main cuisines of the world during the peak time, according to Taipei Universiade Organizing Committee (TUOC). The dining hall is expected to serve 35,000-40,000 meals a day and will operate 20 hours straight each day, the TUOC said in a statement on Thursday.

Considering the cultural and religious differences in the dietary needs of delegations from around the world, Chu Da-chen, director of the Catering and Sports Injury Prevention Division of the TUOC, said that the dining hall will serve five main cuisines of the world, including Asian, European/Mediterranean, Halal and vegetarian cuisines as well as pizza and pasta dishes. The dining area will be separated into the hot food area, the beverage area, the cold food servery, and the fruit and bread area; and safe, tasty and healthy foods will be served up, Chu added.

“To extend the warmest of welcomes, the dining hall will also serve distinctive Taiwanese dishes, such as braised pork rice and pork soup dumplings, to give athletes a taste of the host country,” said Chu.

Outside the dining hall, the Bravo Café will also be established to serve Taiwan’s famous bubble milk tea to add fun and vitality to the athletes’ village’s catering services and to allow athletes from around the world to experience the authentic Taiwanese gastronomic culture at any time, the director added.
