TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Four children from Orchid Island (Lanyu) dressed in their traditional aboriginal loincloths raised a flag stating "Nuclear waste out of Lanyu," which was written in both Chinese and indigenous language during the Aboriginal Day on August 1.
The Lanyu Youth Action Alliance (蘭嶼青年行動聯盟) called on Lanyu residents to place the flags everywhere in Taiwan. The organization insisted that they will not accept the apology from the government until all nuclear waste is removed from the island.
Lanyu is a southeastern island of Taiwan, governed as Lanyu Township of Taitung County. The island is home to the Tao, an ethnic minority group who reportedly migrated to the island from the Batan Archipelago 800 years ago.
