MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican immigration officials have found 147 Central American migrants abandoned by a roadside, apparently left by people smugglers.
The immigration agency says the migrants were found Sunday near the border of Veracruz and the northern border state of Tamaulipas.
The agency says the migrants had been transported aboard a tractor truck in crowded, unhealthy conditions in a bid to reach the United States. It says the smugglers told the migrants to get out, saying they would return, but never did.
The migrants tried to find shelter in the undergrowth.
They include 48 minors, including 14 unaccompanied by adults.
The migrants from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua have been taken into immigration custody.
