A 33-year-old male climber was killed Saturday after he fell into a mountain ravine in eastern Taiwan's Hualien County on Saturday, while his climbing team was rushing to leave the area before Typhoon Nesat hit Taiwan.

The man, surnamed Huang (黃), was exiting the mountains from Shueiyuandi's Sapodang (沙婆礑) in Xiulin Township, Hualien County, at 7 a.m. Saturday when he fell into the ravine, according to Hualien police.

Huang showed no signs of life when rescue workers found him at the bottom of the ravine, officials from the Hualien County Fire Department said.

The climbing team, consisting of 22 people, entered the mountains on July 22 to climb the east peak of Qilai Mountain, the police said.

Nesat, the ninth storm to develop in the Pacific this year, is forecast to make landfall in Hualien late Saturday.
