Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. Chairman Terry Gou is reportedly considering running for Taiwan president in 2020, the Next Magazine reported on Tuesday.
The 66-year old founder of Hon Hai, known as Foxconn outside Taiwan, reportedly held a secret meeting on the night of the U.S. election, to work on their response to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’ shocking victory.
He also sought advice from his senior staff on running for president in 2020, according to the magazine, signaling that he is actively considering the idea.
The closed-door meeting was participated by Hon Hai CFO Huang Chiu-ling and some of his most trusted senior staff members, the report said.
Terry Gou is known for his outspoken view on politics and a staunch supporter of the opposition party Kuomintang.
The idea of Gou running for president is by no means without support. Several political pundits and politicians have in the past publicly stated they would back Gou if he decides to run for the post.
If the idea becomes a reality, the Hon Hai chairman will be the first big businessman in Taiwan to run for president.
Gou has not responded to a request for comment on the report.
