Gaming contest in India boosts Taiwan product visibility

The finals of the third Taiwan Excellence Gaming Cup have kicked off in Mumbai, India, as part of Taiwan's efforts to boost the visibility of Made-in-Taiwan high-tech products in the Indian market.

The two-day gaming competition continued into Saturday after a total of 378 teams competed with one another in the preliminary contests in six Indian cities in recent months.

The number of participating teams this year increased 86 percent from a year earlier, according to the organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

TAITRA said that the significant growth in participants showed the gaming competition is popular in India.

Huang Chiao-mei (黃嬌美), head of the TAITRA's marketing division, said that the Taiwan Excellence Gaming Cup has become the largest gaming competition in India and served as a good platform to allow Indian consumers to know about Taiwan-made information devices.

The top winner in the 2016 competition will be awarded 200,000 rupees or about NT$100,000 (US$3,155), and the second place winner will get 80,000 rupees, while the third and the fourth place winners will be given 40,000 rupees each, TAITRA said.

The gaming contest has 12 Taiwanese high-tech firms as sponsors. They are able to showcase their products in the competition venue.

The 12 sponsors include PC brands Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩), Acer Inc. (宏碁), Micro-Star International Co. (MSI,微星), networking equipment maker D-Link Corp. (友訊) and Gigabyte Technology Corp. (技嘉), which is a supplier of mother boards and other computer peripheral products.

Huang said that the TAITRA held the gaming competition in Infiniti shopping center of Mumbai and hoped that the venue will attract not only gamers but also Indian consumers so that they can gain a better understanding of Taiwan's strength in information technology.

MSI, which has entered the virtual reality business, set up a special zone in the competition venue, where visitors are able to experience VR technology and learn about its products. MSI recently unveiled its VR One, described by the company as the world's lightest VR backpack PC.

Raj Kumar and AKshay Chauhan, two college students in India, told the CNA that they didn't know anything about Taiwan or that it was able to roll out excellent high-tech devices.

They said that the gaming competition gave them a chance to learn that Taiwan has so many good brands, such as Acer, Asustek, MSI and Gigabyte, which makes them more likely to buy products from these brands in the future.

Chang Yi-feng (張毅鋒), secretary of the economic sector of Taiwan's representative office in India, said that Taiwan and India are complementary in economic development and expressed hopes both sides will seize business opportunities to work with each other.
