Alishan Forest Area closes as typhoon approaches

The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area and the Aogu Wetland and Forest Park closed Tuesday as Strong Typhoon Meranti approached southern Taiwan, according to the Chiayi Forest District Office under the Forestry Bureau.

People were advised not to visit mountainous or wetland areas in the two areas, as Chiayi County was under the sway of the incoming typhoon and heavy rain was expected, the office said.

In the southernmost county of Pingtung, beaches in Kenting National Park were closed at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the website of the park headquarters.

Basianshan, Dasyueshan, Hehuanshan and Wuling National Forest Recreation Areas in Taichung and Nantou County will be closed starting from the following day, said the Forestry Bureau.

Taichung, Nantou and Chiayi counties are within the sway of the typhoon, which will bring rain and wind to Taiwan from Wednesday to Thursday noon, according to a land warning issued by the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Yushan National Park Headquarters said that more than 100 mountain climbers are in the park and has been notifying them to go home or find shelter as soon as possible.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Meranti was centered 350 kilometers east-southeast of Hengchun Township in Pingtung County, moving at a speed of 20 kph in a west-northwesterly direction toward the sea southwest of Kaohsiung, according to the CWB.
