Due to the possibility of Typhoon Meranti affecting the transportation service, Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSR) announced on Tuesday that all THSR trains will operate as scheduled on Sep 13 (Tuesday) and Sep 14 (Wednesday), and whether the trains on the Mid-Autumn Festival on Sep 15 will be operated normally or not will be announced at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Even though the THSR plans to operate all trains as scheduled on Wednesday, the trains after Wednesday noon could be delayed because of the typhoon, especially in the section between Tainan Station and Zuoying Station in southern Taiwan, the THSR said. If the winds and rain are too strong after Wednesday noon, the trains will reduce their speeds or even suspend service between the two stations, the THSR said.

As there will be a surge of passengers during the festival, the THSR said it will operate extra trains with all non-reserved seats to transport passengers depending on the crowd situations at the stations.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said that as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, strong Typhoon Meranti was located 490 kilometers east-southeast of Hengchun Township, moving at a speed of above 20 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction toward Taiwan. The CWB has included Taitung County, Pingtung County, Orchid Island, Green Island, Hengchun Peninsula, Hualien County, Tainan City and Kaohsiung City in the alert area.
