High Speed Rail to add 118 more trains

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) will schedule extra trains during the Mid-Autumn Festival to cater to the large number of travelers expected during the holiday, the company announced Monday.

A total of 118 additional train services on top of the original schedules will be operating from September 14 to 19, with 62 of them southbound and 56 northbound, the railway company said.

The company also encouraged travelers to book train tickets in advance, or purchase them through the THSRC partnering convenience stores or online booking systems to avoid the queues.

In order to encourage travelers to plan ahead for the holiday, early bird discount is applied to as much as 435 trains during the holiday. Eight extra trains with reserved seats will also be arranged on September 13 and September 19, while the rest of the additional trains will have no reserved seats, the company added.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Meranti could dampen this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival fun as the latest forecast shows the storm has turned into a strong typhoon, and is expected to come closest to Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said that it will issue a sea warning for the strengthened typhoon tonight before 11:30 p.m. and a land warning on Tuesday morning at the soonest.
