The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange opened at 9,031.51 today. After coming off an early high of 9,031.51, the index closed at the day's low of 8,947.06 points, down 106.63. Turnover totaled NT$75.41 billion.

The weighted index, excluding the financial sector, closed at 7,602.91 points, down 98.62.

A total of 1,961 stocks closed up, and 3,203 ended down with 460 unchanged.

The top 10 stocks in terms of trading volume were 00632R, 00637L, 2409, 3481, 2328, 6116, 00633L, 2330, 2317 and 2303.

The top 10 stocks in terms of trading value were 2330, 3008, 2474, 2317, 00632R, 2377, 2412, 2328, 00633L and 2454.

The top 10 stocks in terms of market capitalization were 2330, 2317, 2412, 6505, 2882, 1301, 1326, 1303, 2881 and 3008.

Foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$15.05 billion worth of shares on the TWSE, and local investment trust firms recorded a net sell of NT$534 million. Proprietary securities firms for self-trading purposes served as net sellers of NT$390 million, while proprietary securities firms for hedging purposes bought a net NT$823 million.

According to the TWSE, market capitalization of the local main board stood at NT$26.70 trillion last week, up NT$199.15 billion from a week earlier.

The TWSE said that the weighted index on the main board rose 66.14 points, or 0.74 percent last week. The FTSE TWSE Taiwan 50 Index gained 40.50 points or 0.60 percent, while the Formosa Stock Index added 83.19 points, or 0.80 percent in the week.

Among the major sectors on the main board, the glass/ceramics sector scored the highest gains of 10.28 percent, while the optoelectronics sector suffered the steepest decline of 1.93 percent.

The index, excluding the financial sector, rose 57.97 points or 0.76 percent, the index, excluding the electronics sector, gained 82.39 points or 0.66 percent, and the index, excluding the financial and electronics sectors, added 74.95 points or 0.69 percent.

The TWSE said that the total turnover on main board hit NT$427.59 billion, and stock turnover reached NT$384.54 billion last week with the turnover ratio at 1.44 percent.

The top three sectors in terms of turnover were the semiconductor sector, the sector of other electronics devices, and the optoelectronics sector.

Turnover of the semiconductor sector totaled NT$80.17 billion, accounting for 20.85 percent of the total stock turnover, turnover of the sector of other electronics devices reached NT$46.69 billion, representing 12.14 percent, and turnover of the optoelectronics sector hit NT$39.43 billion, making up 10.25 percent.

The top three sectors in terms of turnover ratio were the optoelectronics sector (3.96 percent), the electric/machinery sector (3.23 percent), and the electronics distribution sector (3.15 percent).

The TWSE said that since the beginning of this year, there had been 169 trading sessions on the local main board. During the period, turnover totaled NT$13.69 trillion billion with the daily average at NT$80.99 billion, and the turnover ratio hit 44.75 percent with the daily average at 0.26 percent.
