Public urged to store water ahead of typhoon

As this year’s 14th typhoon Meranti is expected to strike Taiwan this week, Taiwan Water Corporation has urged the public to stockpile water, for the storm may affect water quality, rendering clean water resources unusable, the department announced Monday.

According to the latest Central Weather Bureau forecast, Typhoon Meranti is moving towards Taiwan and is expected to intensify over the next few days before it hits the island on Wednesday, which coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival this year.

The bureau said Monday morning that it will issue a sea warning for Typhoon Meranti tonight before 11 p.m. at the soonest, as the storm continues to head directly for Taiwan, and is expected to come closest to the island on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Taiwan Water Corporation has advised the public to stock up on water, as supply may be suspended as a result of Typhoon Meranti.

According to a new standard operation procedure (SOP) adopted by the department, water purification plants may be shut down if the reservoir water quality deteriorated due to high-turbidity.
