Magnitude 4.2 temblor rattles eastern Taiwan

A magnitude-4.2 earthquake shook eastern Taiwan at 3:13 p.m. Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The earthquake was centered 31.4 kilometers north of the Hualien County government headquarters and occurred at a depth of 23.1 kilometers, according to the bureau.

It was felt most strongly in the Taroko scenic area in northern Hualien, where it registered 4 on Taiwan's 1-7 earthquake intensity scale, and in Nan'ao Township in Yilan County, where the intensity level was 3, the bureau said.

Residents of Hualien City and central Taiwan's Nantou County also felt the tremors, the weather bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
