Taiwan Culinary Exhibition expecting record visitors: organizers

The annual Taiwan Culinary Exhibition will likely see record-high attendance, attracting over 160,000 visitors, its organizers said Thursday.

The festival, which will be held between Aug. 5-8, will highlight more than 800 booths -- 200 more than last year and will be the biggest ever -- said Janice Lai, head of the Taiwan Visitors Association.

This year's exhibition will also feature fine ingredients and authentic flavors of Taiwan, inviting visitors to "return to original simple, good tastes," she said.

There will be demonstrations of how food was preserved in old times as well, the association said, to give visitors a sense of the unique food culture in Taiwan.

For instance, the exhibition will showcase wind-dried ingredients such as grass jelly and dried persimmon from northern Taiwan's Hsinchu County, where farmers take advantage of the autumn winds that blow through the region.

In the Taiwanese agriculture exhibit area, the Council of Agriculture will provide a platform for the promotion of local produce that will enable the public to buy directly from small farmers.

The expo will take place at the Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1, and admission is NT$200 (US$6.3) at the door.
