Tsai eyes expansion of cross-strait market

Taipei, July 28 (CNA) Taiwanese businesses should expand cooperation with their Chinese counterparts to create economic and trade ties that are complementary, President Tsai Ing-wen said Thursday during a meeting with local industry leaders.

"It is our priority to boost industry," Tsai said when exchanging views on industrial policies with a 55-member delegation including Rock Hsu, chairman of Taiwan's Chinese National Federation of Industries.

To do so, it is important that Taiwan and China find a common ground on industrial development so they can tap into the new market together, she said.

Taiwan's economy also needs an overall structural readjustment, and the transformation of Taiwan's industry is essential to create better job opportunities and solve the problems of low salaries and long overtime hours, according to Tsai.

Through well-designed government policies, more investment could be introduced into sectors that focus on innovation, which could in turn improve the quality of people's lives, she explained. (By Sophia Yeh and Lee Hsin-Yin)
